Chancel Dramas for Six Lenten Services

These six dramas are based on the Series B Gospel for Lent.  They require a minimal amount of costuming or props and are meant as a springboard for the themes of the Gospel readings.

The focus description may be printed in the bulletin or read before the drama is given.

Watching God’s Plan Unfold

For Lent 1, based on Mark 1:9-15
Focus: Living out God’s plan for our lives….  Jesus knew that the journey marked out for His life would not be easy.  Yet He gave up the glories of heaven to live as a human, to endure temptation and trials, and to invite all to “repent and believe in the gospel.”  Because He lives, we can live also.

To Tell a Tale

For Lent 2, based on Mark 8:27-38
Focus:  Scripture, like life, doesn’t always seem to make sense.  But if we look at God’s Word as a whole, we see that God’s answer is Jesus.  It is “crazy love” that purchased and won us from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil… without any merit or worthiness in us.

Whatever

For Lent 3, based on John 2:13-22
Focus:  Is getting angry a sin?  As we look at God’s Word, we read about a time when Jesus—the perfect, sinless Son of God—got angry.  So we know that anger isn’t always a sin.  Through this story, we learn that God is serious about sin.  We also learn a “whatever” mnemonic that helps us focus on what to think about!

3:16

For Lent 4, based on John 3:14-21
Focus:  The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  (1 Cor. 1:18) When people ask, it’s good to be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you and do it with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)

Say What?

For Lent 5, based on Mark 10:35-45
Focus:  We often confuse power and greatness.  The world equates power and honor with greatness.  God sees greatness in those who serve.  Micah 6:8 says:
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?

He Knew!

For Lent 6, based on Mark 14:1-15:47
Focus:  Jesus, as Omniscient God, knew what horrors He would face during those last days.  Yet He stayed the course and did it… for us!  His death and resurrection give us salvation.
