Devotion: Sunflowers

Have you ever driven past a sunflower field filled with hundreds of sunflowers? I’ll never forget the day that I did and would you believe every single flower was facing toward our car? It was breathtaking. It was amazing! One of those moments when you can’t help but praise God for His beautiful creation.

We can learn a lesson from sunflowers. The reason they were all facing toward our car was because the sun was on our side. Sunflowers always turn their faces to the sun. They’re created to do that. They yearn for that sunshine so much that they will turn any direction to reach it.

We need to do the same thing!Yearn for the “Son.” Desire Jesus so much that we are constantly seeking Him in all that we do. Psalm 73:25 says, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.” There is nothing that we should desire more than we desire God.

Having gone through three pregnancies, I know what it is like to have a “craving,” to want one particular thing, and nothing else can satisfy that craving except for that thing. Psalm 42:2 says, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” The author here is craving God. The sunflowers in the field crave sunshine and they flourish when they get it. When we are baptized, the Holy Spirit enters our hearts and He creates that desire, that craving that we have for God. Some days we may not notice it so much, but when we spend more time with God, the more we will crave Him. The more we crave Him, the more we want to spend time with Him and the more our faith will grow!

Dear Holy Spirit, Work in us to crave time with Jesus more and more each day! To crave to be closer to you. In Jesus’ name we ask this, Amen.
