Grand Entrance

Download PDF of Grand Entrance for the First Sunday in Advent.

Text: Luke 19:28-40 (Advent 1C)

Objectives

  1. Understand the significance of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
  2. Learn of Jesus’ humiliation that takes him to the cross.

Instructions: This Bible Study has been developed for use in small groups of 6-8 persons, if your group is larger than this, divide into smaller groups. Choose as the leader whoever lives farthest from church. The leader’s sole purpose is to keep the group moving through the study and ensure that everyone who wishes can participate.

Materials

  1. Bible
  2. Writing utensil

Community Building

  • Share your name, school, and a fun fact about yourself. Then do the following exercise.
  • Have each participant come up with their best “Dad” or goofy joke. After each joke, have everyone clap and cheer based on how good they think the joke is. If there is time, ask the question: How does it feel to be recognized for something you do? How does it feel when you don’t?

Looking at God’s Word

Have someone in the group read Luke 19:28-40.

  1. What is Jesus doing in this passage?

Jesus is fulfilling the prophecies made about him in the Old Testament. He is entering as the King at the start of Passion Week.

  • How do the people respond to Him as He enters?
  • In this moment, Jesus is coming into the city to loud praises and celebrations. But he wasn’t coming in as a military leader or earthly king. What would happen next for Jesus?
  • What does Jesus’ riding into Jerusalem on a colt mean for us?

Jesus is the Messiah who came to fulfill all prophecy, to live a perfect life, and to die on our behalf so we could be made righteous. Jesus is doing this as he prepares to go to the cross for us.

  • What are some of the ways we see Jesus humble himself in the Gospels? What does that humiliation lead to?
  • What does it mean to humble ourselves as Christians?

Look at verses Colossians 3:12-13; Ephesians 4:1-7. Because of God’s gift to us, we are called to be humble, gentle and forgiving with others.

  • When is Christ exalted? What gifts do we receive in His exaltation?
  • How does Christ’s humiliation versus exaltation show us that he is fully God and fully man?

It can be helpful here to look at the Questions 126 – 146 in Luther’s Small Catechism from 1986 edition or Questions 170-175 in the 2017 edition where the humiliation and exaltation of Jesus are covered in the Second Article of the Creed.

Reinforcing What We’ve Learned

  • Fill in the blank: “Today I learned that…”
  • What is Christ’s humiliation versus exaltation?
