Text: Luke 17:11-19 for the Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost, Lectionary Series C

OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

1. Be reminded to remain faithful and grateful to our Lord for our undeserved gifts.
2. Learn not to give in to the majority just because it is popular.

MATERIALS NEEDED

Bible

GROUP GUIDELINES

Break the larger group into groups of ten. Choose a leader whose birthday is closest to Christmas Day. The leader’s role is to keep the group moving through the study, encourage participation and keep track of the time each individual is given to share.

COMMUNITY BUILDING

1. On your own finish the following statements.

Fast Food Restaurant is     

Sport is    

I have ________ brothers and sisters.

I (am/am not) a Christian.

So far I think this is a good Bible study. (Yes/No)

2. Share your answers with your group.
3. Did you find that you have at least one thing in common with your group?

LOOKING AT GOD’S WORD

Read Luke 17:11-19.

1. What did the ten men have in common? What were the consequences of having the disease?
2. Why did they stand at a distance? What did the separation from society do to these men?
3. What did the future hold for these ten men, if Jesus had not cleansed them?
4. Where do you think the other nine men went, when they did not return to thank Jesus?
5. Did all ten men have faith? What can you say about the nine who showed ingratitude? How do you see their faith?

REINFORCING WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNED

1. Can you name spiritual diseases that separates us from society?
2. What do the people who suffer the spiritual diseases have in common with each other? What do they have in common with the ten men from Luke 17:11-19?
3. What hope do the people infected with spiritual diseases have left? To whom can they lift their voices for healing? Do you think that the ten men knew about Jesus, before He healed them? Why is it important for us to learn about Jesus and what He has done? Why does this passage motivate us to share God’s Word with those who do not know about Jesus?
4. Think of the Samaritan man who returned to give thanks to Jesus. What do you think gave him the impulse to detach himself from the group and do what he thought was the right thing, even though he was the only one?

In your circle of friends are you in the majority who does the popular thing or are you in the minority who makes a difference, and does what is pleasing in the eyes of God?
