Text: 2 Peter 3:8-14 for the Second Sunday in Advent, Lectionary Series B

OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

Know that the Lord wants to save all people, including them.
Know that the only way to be at peace with God on the day of His coming is to know His son Jesus Christ.
Strive to live a life that honors and points to Jesus Christ.

MATERIALS NEEDED

Bible
Pencils

GROUP GUIDELINES

Break into groups of 4-6. The group leader is to keep discussion moving between all participants. The leader is the person with the lightest hair color.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

First time around the group, tell where you would like to be found when the Day of the Lord comes.
Now tell the group the last place you would like to be found when the day of the Lord comes.

LOOKING AT GOD’S WORD

Read 2 Peter 3:8-14.
According to verses 10-13, what things are supposed to happen on the last day, the Day of the Lord? (verses 10-13).
Verse 9 shows us that, although God wants all people to be saved, there will be people who perish on that last day. Read 2 Peter 3:3-7. What is the description of these people?
What is the reference to the last time God destroyed the world? (verse 6)
Have someone in the group read Genesis 6:5-9. Why did God want to destroy the world then? (verse 5)
Why did God spare Noah and save him and his family? (verse 9)

REINFORCING WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNED

The things Noah was known for in his day are the same things talked about in 2 Peter 3:14, which tells us to make every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with God. How do we become spotless, blameless and at peace with God?

Spotless, Blameless: Colossians 1:21-22
At peace with God: Romans 5:1

How can we make every effort to know Jesus, for in Him and through Him there is peace with God?

CLOSING

Close by praying:

Lord Jesus, thank you for making us spotless and blameless before God. Send us your Holy Spirit to guide us and strengthen us to live a godly life that honors you every day of our life. Amen.
