On Campus: Uncertainty

Uncertainty is quite common in college. You may not know what the next day brings. You may not know what you want to become. You might not even know who your friends will be. College swarms with uncertainty, but that is the beauty of it. During the college years you have more room to make mistakes and learn from them. It seems that’s what this time of life is for. For us to acknowledge, learn, and grow.

Now while the uncertainty of college may be exciting, it may also feel a little frightening. Remember that there is one thing that is certain: God’s love! We are never alone because we are loved.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

As uncertain as we may feel, as confused as we may be, there is nothing that can take us from the power of God’s love. We can trust Him.

Jesus himself is certainty. We can know with certainty that he is always with us and always looking out for us. On God’s end of things, there is not one bit of uncertainty! That is the beauty of Christ! We may not know what is to come of our lives, but we can be certain of the truth of God’s word. Whenever we feel overwhelmed with uncertainty, we can go to the Bible and read God’s word. We can always count on it. When we join with other believers in worship, we hear His Word with our own ears. We take part in the true presence of Christ in Holy Communion. When we are part of a Christian community (in a congregation, in a campus ministry, in a Bible study) we can be encouraged by our spiritual family that God’s love is certain.

For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

College is an adventure full of unknown circumstances. Remember that you are forgiven, loved, and never alone – now and forever. We can trust that God will navigate us unto the right path. Through the Word of God and the Sacraments He has given us, we can be sure that no matter where life takes us, we will always have God by our side.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path (Psalm 119:105).

You can go forth into the world of uncertainty with the certainty of His love!
