There has been uproar in the media and blogging community about the recent release of Gwen Thompson, Mattel’s newest American Girl doll.  Like all the other American Girl dolls, Gwen has a story line. Gwen is homeless.  After she and her mother are abandoned by her father, they are forced to live in their car. Eventually they are able to move to a shelter before finding a new apartment home.  The story associated with Gwen sounds harmless enough, since there are young children all over our country who are homeless, especially since the recent economic downturn.  In fact, Gwen is not the first of the American Girl dolls to have a family that deals with economic struggles.

The popular TLC show Jon and Kate Plus 8 has been all over the news recently as the couple featured in the reality show, Jon and Kate Gosselin, struggle with a quickly deteriorating marriage. Initially the show, which debuted in 2006, focused on the couple as they raised their eight children, a set of twins and a set of septuplets. This past season a record number of viewers have watched not just to see this family raise their children, but to see their marriage come apart at the seams. From the initial accusations of infidelity and verbal abuse, both Jon and Kate have turned their divorce into an all out media war.

After a recent office move, I was given a cardboard cut-out of our Deaconess who used to share an office with me. This 18 inch cut-out had a photo for a face with a long shirt and a suit jacket for clothes, both in the deaconess uniform navy blue. When the first grade class passed by my office and spotted the cut-out, they immediately asked me one question. "Where are her pants?" I tried to explain that the shirt she was wearing covered everything except the tiny cardboard feet that stuck out on each side, but these kids just weren't buying it. They demanded that Deaconess Karen's cut-out receive proper clothing and so with the help of our first grade teacher, they created the most colorful and elaborate pants any cardboard cut-out has ever been graced to wear.

A few weeks ago I ran into two boys from my congregation, high school juniors, in the local mall food court. I stopped to talk with them about their summers and getting back into school. After about 10 minutes of small talk I politely excused myself to go grab my dinner. As soon as I sat down, they joined me and we proceeded to eat and banter for a good half hour. If I ever felt like I was doing the relational part of my job well, it was now.
