Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a Voice behind you, saying, “This is the Way; walk in it. (Isaiah 30:21)

One day I had an unhappy adventure with a stalled elevator. For ten minutes I was suspended between the seventh and eighth floors of a high rise building. Okay. It was more like two minutes, but time slowed to a crawl.

The next time I needed to use that same elevator, I opted for what I thought was the “easy” exit. I took the stairs instead. A small sign was posted by the exit door. It read, “All exits lock. No egress into the main building.”

What’s an egress? A baby eagle? I ignored the sign as I swung the exit door open and walked onto the stair landing. The door locked behind me with a loud pop as my brain flashed a warning.

“No egress means that you can’t get back inside the building from the stairs. Fool.”

OH. Seven flights of stairs. Seven doors. All locked. It wasn’t an easy exit.

Our lives are littered with difficult situations and the promises of easy exits.

“Anxious? Upset? Have a drink! You’ll feel better.”

“Need some money? Take a few bucks from your dad’s wallet!”

“Had unprotected sex last night? Go buy Plan B.”

These voices can be so convincing. What’s the harm in it? Really?

“I won’t get drunk.”

“Dad doesn’t ever check his wallet.”

“Plan B is just a birth control pill.”

There is only one Voice that you can rely on to speak the Truth. It’s the One whispering in your ear. It is the Voice of the great Counselor, and He is prepared to show you the Way.

Here is your assurance. No matter what difficulties you may be experiencing, Jesus will carry the load with you. He will guide and provide every step of the way. Listen to His voice. Don’t take easy exits. Choose life.

YOUR PRAYER: Dear Lord, which way do I go? I can’t rely on my own judgment. I need to hear Your voice whispering in my ear. Show me what I need to do. Help me carry the load. I am yours. Amen.
